Wilderness Eco-Tours
Mattawa has one of the most scenic outback areas in Ontario. In 1615 Etienne Brule and Samuel de Champlain were the first Europeans to pass through this area. Mattawa is home to the convergence of two rivers, the Ottawa and the Mattawa. This is where the Mattawa gets its name because in Ojibwa it means "Meeting of the Waters".
In the past, Mattawa was an important place, due to its location along the voyageur's canoe route from Montreal to the Great Lakes. It was a hub for both the fur and lumber trade.
Today Mattawa provides access to numerous dropping off points for canoeing or boating on the Ottawa River which acts as a natural border between the hills of the province of Quebec and Ontario.
The Mattawa River flows through the pristine rugged Canadian shield with opportunities to see moose, eagles, the haunting and beautiful sounds of loons at night and terrific fishing, camping, and hiking.
The back woods are home to many scenic trails and ATV paths for you to discover. With such rich history there are many things to see and do. At Argoanybear Outdoors we run tours with our Argo bush machines through the network of trail systems, and at times starring in your very own expedition through the beautiful wood lands just like the explorers of times past.
Many of the popular tours encompass a scenic look at Mattawa and area. A tour to the Three Crosses, which were erected originally in 1917, enables you to get right beside them for a photo op. As historical as the sight is, make a 180 turn and you will be stunned by the view from above. Ever see the curvature of the earth NOT from an airplane? This will take your breath away! Also, we have tours through the multi-use trail system along with a stunning, blaze of color infused ride in the fall. You have never seen something so remarkable. The only time you can tour through a blaze of red, yellow and orange without the need of a fire extinguisher!
This country is something to behold, and for all to cherish. Mattawa may have originally meant "meeting of the waters", but to us it's simply an outdoor enthusiast's dream, and a family portrait of beauty, fun and nature all rolled into one.
