About 11,000 years ago, when the glaciers receded to the far north it carved out many depressions in the landscape. Many of these glacial impressions filled up with fresh water and were naturally stocked by Mother Nature to produce a truly awe-inspiring environment for one of the best kept secrets of the north. Northern Ontario, known for great Walleye populations and fierce Northern Pike that can run up to over 52" in length, but the real jewel here is the Speckled Trout.
The Speckled Trout is revered as one of the most beautiful game fish and the best eating trout in the World. The Speckled Trout, also known as Brook Trout, can also be an elusive fish down south but easier to catch in the north. They need the right water conditions and the right food to prosper in good numbers and in good sizes. These conditions are found in abundance here in Northern Ontario and more specifically here and around Mattawa, ON. |

Much of the Mattawa back country is inaccessible to most this and this is the reason for their great numbers and sizes, and this in-turn created the opportunity for world class trophy Speck's. Speckled Trout are common in the 1 to 3-pound range. There are many 4, 5 and 6 pound Specks caught as well. On occasion, Speckled Trout in the 7 to 9-pound range are caught but they are rare in most parts of Southern Ontario, but more abundant in this area. To accompany this amazing environment for Speckled Trout, lake trout are also prevalent here in Mattawa and area with Lakers reaching an easy 20+ lbs.
